JSR-283, JCR 2.0, has been implemented - taking Jackrabbit beyond the original capabilities of JSR-170 (JCR 1.0). A Java Content Repository is well-suited to storing hierarchical information; something SQL is less suited to do. Apache Lucene can search the text in repository. The data can be queried with XPath. WebDAV is supported too.
